Smart sensors: The future of intelligent measurement for Industry 4.0
The development of intelligent sensors with advanced communication capabilities represents one of the key factors in the implementation of the Industry 4.0 concept. The latest generation of inductive and photoelectric smart sensors brings significant advantages in terms of precision, extended functionality, and the ability to make decentralized decisions. Contrinex intelligent sensors combine accurate measurement with local data processing, predictive maintenance, and direct device-to-device communication.

Technology that understands the process

Unlike traditional sensors that merely transmit information to supervisory systems (e.g., PLCs), SMART sensors are equipped with built-in processing logic. This means they are capable of independently analyzing measured values, comparing them against predefined thresholds, triggering alarms, and even communicating directly with other devices — all without the need for a central controller.

The IO-Link protocol, along with SIO support, allows for easy integration into existing automation systems, while dual-channel outputs provide parallel functionality — one channel for standard communication and the other for fast local action.

Micrometer precision, millisecond decisions

Whether inductive or photoelectric, the SMART sensor series offers high measurement accuracy — even under demanding conditions. Inductive models (Smart Basic, DMS, and AMS) cover measurement ranges from 4 to 10 mm, while photoelectric sensors from the C23 and M18 series enable detection at distances up to 30,000 mm, featuring multiple operating modes (diffuse, retro-reflective, through-beam, background suppression).
Thanks to high-resolution measurement, it is possible to detect micron-level deviations in dimensions, positioning, or vibrations — which is crucial for quality control and monitoring of fine mechanical assemblies.

Predictive maintenance – The sensor knows before the machine stops

One of the most important features of SMART sensors is the built-in system for predictive maintenance. The sensor continuously monitors internal and external parameters such as temperature, number of operating cycles, measurement deviations, and detection frequency. Based on this data, the sensor can autonomously generate warnings or alarms, enabling intervention before an actual failure occurs — significantly reducing downtime and service costs.

Code-Free Configuration – PocketCodr as a tool of the future

Sensor configuration is often a challenge, especially in systems with a large number of devices. The PocketCodr application addresses this problem with a visual interface that allows sensor setup without requiring programming knowledge. Using so-called Action Widgets, users can define thresholds, alarms, timers, output functions, and share configurations between multiple sensors — all in just a few steps.

Application flexibility – One solution for multiple challenges

SMART sensors are developed with a focus on flexibility. Each sensor can have user-defined memory, meaning it can be labeled with tags such as "Pneumatic Cylinder 1", "Tool Position", or "End Stop" — which greatly simplifies identification and maintenance in large-scale systems.
User-configurable outputs allow a single sensor to cover multiple functions: from object detection and pulse counting to sending specific logical signals. Built-in features such as stretch, delay, one-shot pulse, detection counter, and automatic teach make these sensors ideal for a wide range of applications — from simple assembly lines to complex CNC and AGV systems.

Typical industrial applications

SMART sensors have already been implemented across numerous industries, including:
  • Assembly automation – component presence detection, nut welding inspection
  • Metal processing – double sheet detection, roller eccentricity monitoring
  • Electronics manufacturing – PCB component dimension control, reflow inspection
  • Logistics and warehousing – package height measurement, AGV vehicle positioning
  • Pneumatics and hydraulics – piston positioning and operating temperature monitorin

Conclusion

SMART sensors are an essential element of modern automation — devices that not only measure but also understand what they measure. Through the integration of advanced algorithms, local logic, and flexible interfaces, they enable the development of smarter, faster, and more reliable production systems. In an age where every millisecond and micrometer can mean the difference between profit and loss, SMART sensors emerge as an indispensable tool for every industrial automation engineer.
